Tithe Transitions
Mission and Money for The Rocky Mountain Conference
Vol. 1 No. 20 January 22, 2008
"...by the fifteenth of every month, each local church treasurer shall remit to the annual conference 10% (+1%) of the previous month's net contributions."
4 Weeks Remaining to First Report!

Paul Dirdak, our interim treasurer until the first week of January, has left for another assignment (in Africa) but before he left, he finished writing the Tithe Transitions notes. Here is this week's installment:

Another Tuesday in the Rocky Mountain United Methodist neighborhood. In a very few weeks, you will all have submitted your first remittance of the Church Tithe Apportionment. You have been reading about it for twenty-one weeks prior to today, and I applaud all of you for your steady persistence.

Since January 7, you have had a new Conference Treasurer. Since July 16, of last year, I have served you as an Interim Conference Treasurer. You all know, I think, that the full title is "Conference Treasurer, Pensions Officer and Director of Support Services."

Your new CFO is Mr. Wayne Bettendorf. He has been introduced by way of a letter to all clergy from Bishop Brown and by a note to you all from Skip Strickland, Director of Mission and Ministry. It was my privilege to manage the search process for an elected Search Committee which reviewed resumes, conducted interviews and made hard judgments. We have all been enthusiastic about Wayne's coming. He and I have been involved in a hand-off and orientation process since he began his service earlier this month. As of a few days ago, I am starting a financial advice and consulting role for three other conferences, similar to the work that I have done for you in Rocky Mountain. Two of these conferences are in Mozambique and another is in Liberia. Our church is a fairly intimate family. Eight or nine time zones isn't far, so our conversation about excellence in church management just continues under slightly different circumstances.

The specific work that I have been asked to do pertains to the modern and competent administration of the church's money as the church tries to provide for pastors in poor countries. Just as in the US, donor confidence is the result of transparent excellence. Mozambicans and Liberians have as much right to demonstrated trustworthiness as anyone does. Hence, the work.

I looked forward to learning as much from Wayne as you will learn. He comes with a life of professional experience in administering complex, transparent, vital non-profit organizations. His professional peers have honored his accomplishments and turned to him for guidance. We'll all know how to deliver the commitments of our hearts better when we have benefited from his patient guidance.

As ever, it is a privilege to be in God's mission with you.

Paul
