Economic Stimulus Act: Important Info for Low Income People
You may have heard in the news about the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 signed by President Bush which allows for a rebate check to be sent to individual taxpayers. Initially, the rebate was only going to be for those who filed a 2007 Individual Income Tax Return; however, it was changed to allow for those who don't normally file a tax return due to the source of their income (Social Security, Railroad Retirement, Veteran's Affairs benefits) &/or their total income was below amount requiring a return to be filed.

For those who have at least $3000 of income (earned & the normally tax-free sources referenced above), they need to file a return as well to receive the rebate to which they are entitled. Starting next week, the Internal Revenue Service will mail special information packages to 20.5 million recipients of Social Security or Veteran's Affairs benefits to help them get their 2008 economic stimulus payment.

An IRS News Release is available on the RMCUMC.org web site asking churches to inform their parishioners of this. A flyer that churches may want to put on their bulletin boards is here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/p_4670_general.pdf.
